Brain Tumor Survivor Runs Marathons

When you call the U.S. Relations Department at the Assemblies of God World Missions Headquarters, chances are you will talk to Rachel Malone, the receptionist.  However, if you called the first part of December you probably missed her because she was in Florida receiving a prestigious award.

It all started on April 29, 2003. Suffering from growing headaches for five years, she was finally diagnosed with a brain tumor.  They did emergency surgery the next day.

The doctors believed the surgery was a success and Rachel feels blessed.  “Whenever a doctor says, ‘We don’t know how you’re still alive,’ it’s hard to describe how that affects you.  I know life is short.  We may have no control over what happens to us, but what we can control is how we think about life — how we choose to handle what comes our way.”

Ministry Continues, but Devastation Still Taking Toll

Convoy of Hope, working in cooperation with AG World Missions, has now surpassed 1.8 million meals distributed to suffering people in Haiti. According to Convoy of Hope President Hal Donaldson, one million pounds more of relief is in the pipeline bound for Haiti.

Although he is deeply grateful for the work being done by Convoy of Hope, AGWM and the Dominican Republic AG, Calixte Fleuridor, the general superintendent of the Assemblies of God in Haiti, says the conditions in Port-au-Prince are horrific.

“The reality is that one simply cannot live here,” Fleuridor states.  “There’s no place to go. Everything is leveled to the ground and turned into rubble.” Yet, he adds that with more than 200,000 killed in the quake, there are still locations filled with those killed —and the stench in some areas of the city is unbearable.
